Hey James,

Click thru ratio is the statistic of how many times your PPC ad is clicked in relation to how many times it is displayed. For example if you have an ad for dog bones and 100 people type in dog bones into the search engine, your ad will be displayed 100 times. If 5 people click on your ad, then you have a CTR of 5%. When your ad is displayed it is referred to as an impression so in your adwords account you will see a column with impressions and a column with clicks and clicks divided by impressions and then multipled by 100 will give you the CTR.

One of the things google are looking for is a good CTR as it indicates that your ad is relevant to what the searcher was searching for - and they 'reward' you by charging you less per click than if you had a poor CTR.

What is a good CTR? There will be others better qualified to answer that question, but I am happy if I get between 3 - 5% CTR. I read about people who obtain 10 - 15% but I have never been able to achieve a campaign that consistently returned that sort of CTR. Those sort of figures may be achievable on a very tightly targeted campaign that has a very long tail keyword and little competition. I may be wrong but as I said 3 -5% I am satisfied with.

Advertising on the search network and the content network in adwords also return different results usually, and traditionally the content network having a poorer CTR.

Regards,

Steve.
